Fear of Domination ist eine 2006 gegründete Industrial Shock Metal Band, die nicht nur rohe und scharfe Studio-Veröffentlichungen liefert, sondern auch visuell intelligente und aufregende Live-Auftritte.
Lasst euch nicht zu sehr von der apokalyptischen Erscheinung der Band täuschen, denn unter der Oberfläche findet ihr auch eingängige Untertöne der Popmusik aus vielen verschiedenen Genres.
Das dritte Album der Band, „Distorted Delusions“, stieg im Februar 2014 sofort in die offiziellen finnischen Charts auf und erreichte den 6. Platz in den Album-Charts von Rumba. In Finnland ist der Platz der Band in der Metal-Musik bereits fest verwurzelt und internationale Horizonte werden übernommen. Ein Beweis dafür ist die Baltic-Tour 2014 der Band, nach der Fear of Domination die Vorgruppe der amerikanischen Band Hanzel Und Gretyl in Europa war.
Nach ihrem Album „Distorted Delusions“ hat die Band zwei weitere Platten veröffentlicht, die neueste ist die Veröffentlichung „Metanoia“ aus dem Jahr 2018, die sehr positive Kritiken erhielt.

Mitä kuuluu? (Wie geht es euch?)
Sara: Danke, dass du gefragt hast! In Anbetracht der Situation mit Corona laufen die Dinge mit FoD ganz gut! Miikki kam gerade aus den Electric Fox Studios und jetzt sind die Drums für das sechste FoD-Album fertig! Als nächstes kommen die Gitarren, der Bass, die Synthesizer und dann der Gesang.
Erzählt mir von eurer Vergangenheit als Musiker! Sara, bei dir weiß man, dass du schon in der Grundschule Musikunterricht hattest. (Interview mit Shereign).
Ebenfalls bekannt ist, dass du, Saku, schon in der Schule Musik-, Band-, Theaterklassen besucht hast (Interview mit Stereo Terror). Wie sieht es mit dem Rest von euch aus, hattet ihr eine klassische Ausbildung?
Lasse: 12 Jahre klassisches Klavier- und Musiktheorie-Studium (als Hobby). Außerdem besuchte ich die Sekundarstufe II (übrigens mit Johannes) in einer Linie, in der das Musikstudium im Vordergrund stand.
Was macht ihr neben eurer Musik noch? Habt ihr andere Projekte am Start?
Lasse: Ich arbeite hauptberuflich im IT-Support. Es gibt so viele Ideen für andere Projekte, aber leider bleibt viel zu wenig Zeit für diese, während eines Hauptjobs und einer Band, in der ich stark am Komponieren bin und auch an der technischen Seite der Dinge beteiligt bin.
Sara: Ich bin Gesangstrainer und besitze mein eigenes Geschäft. Also Musik den ganzen Weg! Und etwas Malerei und andere Künste, wenn ich Zeit habe.
Saku: Grundsätzlich sind 90% meiner Arbeit musikbezogen, aber ich bin ein Gamemaster bei einer lokalen Escaperoom-Firma. Wenn ich Freizeit habe, mache ich Buhurt, Fallschirmspringen oder trinke einfach ein gutes Bier mit Freunden.
Interessiert ihr euch noch für andere Stile außer Metal?
Lasse: Metal ist ein so weit gefasster Begriff aus so vielen verschiedenen Genres, dass ich sagen würde, dass ich nicht auf alle Arten von Metal stehe. Ich habe einen klassischen Hintergrund und habe in meiner Jugend zum Metal gefunden. Auch habe ich vorher so ziemlich alle Arten von Pop und Oldies gehört (und war ihnen ausgesetzt). Ich mag Prog und Prog Metal heutzutage sehr, höre mir aber so ziemlich alle coolen Sachen an, die auftauchen.
Saku: Ich denke überhaupt nicht an Genres. Gute Musik ist gute Musik, egal welches Genre es ist.
Sara: Wenn du alle Arten von Musik hörst, bist du schlau und entwickelst dich weiter. Ich wäre kein guter Musiker, wenn ich nicht alle Arten von Musikgenres hören würde.
Wie oft trefft ihr euch in eurem Rehearsal-Studio?
Sara: Einmal in der Woche oder manchmal sogar öfter.
Auf Social-Media habt ihr euch schon geäußert, dass ihr an einem neuen Album arbeitet. Wann wird ihr euer neues Album voraussichtlich veröffentlichen?
Saku: Wir haben ehrlich gesagt keine genauen Daten oder Zeiten dafür, aber höchstwahrscheinlich irgendwann im Jahr 2021.
Wer sind eure größten Idole und Inspirationen für FoD in der Musik und welche Platten haben euch daher am meisten beeinflusst?
Lasse: Für mich ist es die Zusammenstellung von allem, was ich in meinem Leben gehört und gelernt habe. Natürlich gibt es für mich viele Dinge von Children of Bodom oder Stam1na, aber auch von einigen proggy Bands wie Dream Theatre. Ich denke, dass einige unbewusste Dinge in den Werken sind, besonders wenn es darum geht, Melodien zu komponieren, die irgendwie schön und melancholisch sind. Ich denke, es hat etwas damit zu tun, finnisch zu sein und all die traditionelle finnische Musik, die stark von slawischer und europäischer Musik beeinflusst ist, die sowohl die melodische als auch die melancholische Seite bringt.
Saku: Das gleiche hier. Wirklich schwer, ein oder zwei Dinge /Personen zu bestimmen. Ich versuche nur, es rein, nackt und ehrlich zu halten und es in der Musik auszudrücken.
Jeder von euch hat ein anderes Face-Painting, wie kamt ihr auf eure unterschiedlichen Face-Paintings?
Lasse: Versuch und Irrtum und seltsame Ideen von verschiedenen Leuten. Wir neigen auch dazu, die Farbe für jedes Album (oder manchmal jedes Jahr) zu ändern, daher gab es für einige der Farben eine Grundidee, für die wir alle die Farben entworfen haben. Es gibt jedoch wirklich nicht zu viele Regeln, sodass jeder das tut, was sich für ihn gut anfühlt.
Saku: Ich beobachte nur mein Gesicht im Spiegel und sehe Formen und Dinge. Ein Pinsel erledigt den Rest.
Im April hat Vesa, euer Haupt-Schlagzeuger, die Band nach 10 Jahren verlassen. Wie war eure Reaktion darauf, als euch Vesa dies mitteilte?
Sara: Diese Entscheidung wurde im gegenseitigen Konsens getroffen, daher gab es keine Reaktion. Es war eine Sache, die schon seit einiger Zeit in der Luft hing. Als die Sperre mit Corona in Finnland begann, hatten wir Zeit, uns zusammen zu setzen und darüber zu reden. Diese Entscheidung wurde getroffen, weil sie gut für Vesa und für Fear Of Domination war.
Jetzt hat Miikki die Position des Hauptschlagzeugers. Wie ist es für dich, Miikki, diesen Teil zu übernehmen?
Miikki: Für mich ist es eine große Ehre. Und wenn ich das sagen darf, (natürlich kann ich das, weil purkki kärpänen), es war einfach für mich, da ich alle Songs kenne und Vesa in den letzten Jahren schon oft vertreten habe. Ich denke, dass der Rest der Band genauso denkt.
Miikki du hattest seit längerem immer wieder Probleme mit deinem Handgelenk. Anfang des Jahres hast du dich einer OP unterzogen. Kannst du jetzt wieder so spielen wie früher?
Sara: Miikki hat sich überraschend gut von seiner Handoperation erholt. Er hat gesagt, dass er keine Schmerzen mehr hat. Ich könnte sagen, dass Miikkis Technik beim Schlagzeugspielen aufgrund dieser Operation noch besser geworden ist! Sein Geist ist so stark!
Viele von euch werden sicherlich auch Hobbys neben der Musik haben. Was für Hobbys habt ihr?
Saku: Buhurt und Fallschirmspringen
Sara: Kunst, Malen, Sport und Pflege meiner Avocadobäume.
Einige von euch haben auch Tattoos. Erzählt mir, welche Bedeutung haben die einzelnen Tattoos für euch?
Saku: Alle sind nur Bilder, die mich an verschiedene Zeiten und Dinge in meinem Leben erinnern.
Sara: Während dieser zehn Jahre, in denen ich meine Tätowierungen bekommen hatte, habe ich mich als Person so sehr verändert, sodass sich auch die Gründe geändert haben. Mein erstes Tattoo war ein Seepferdchen, weil ich das Meer liebte. Mein jüngster Neuzugang neben diesem Seepferdchen war ein Nautilus. Zwischen diesen beiden Tätowierungen hatte ich 5 Tätowierungen, welche die heilige Geometrie der Natur und des menschlichen Körpers ehren.
Saku, heuer hast du dir ein neues Stage-Outfit von Forthefly Costums für deine FoD und TK Shows machen lassen. Doch das ist nicht das erste Mal, dass Forthefly Costums dir ein Stage-Outfit gemacht haben. Wie bist du auf sie gestoßen und woher nimmst du die Inspiration für deine Outfits?
Saku: Ich kannte Keith und Emmi und habe beobachtet, wie sich ihr Geschäft entwickelt hat. Als ich meine alte Weste aufgab, kontaktierte mich Keith und sagte mir, er wolle eine neue für mich machen. Wir haben einige Details besprochen, aber im Grunde genommen wird die gesamte künstlerische und visuelle Seite von ihm gemacht.

Sara: Hört während dieser Corona-Zeiten weiter Musik und wenn es möglich ist, geht zu den Gigs. Unterstützt eure Lieblingsbands und verhindert, dass sie nicht für immer aufhören müssen! Das Teilen ihrer Musik, das Liken und Kommentieren ihrer Social-Media-Beiträge und das Hören ihrer Musik kostet keinen Cent, hilft aber sehr viel!
Fear of Domination is an industrial shock metal band formed in 2006, delivering not only raw and sharp studio releases, but also visually smart and exciting live performances. Don’t be fooled too much by the band’s apocalyptic appearance, as below the surface can also be found catchy popular music undertones from many different genres.
The band’s third album “Distorted Delusions” rose immediately to the official Finnish charts in February 2014, as well as gained the 6th position in Rumba’s album charts. In Finland, the band’s place in metal music is already firmly rooted and international horizons are being taken over. Proof of this is the band’s 2014 Baltic tour, after which Fear of Domination was the supporting act for the American band Hanzel Und Gretyl in Europe.
After their “Distorted Delusions” album, the band has released two more records, the latest one being the 2018 release “Metanoia”, which received very positive reviews.

Sara: Thanks for asking! Considering the situation with corona things with FoD are going quite nicely! Miikki just came from the Electric Fox Studios and now the drums for the sixth FoD album are now ready! Next is going to be the guitars, bass, synths and then vocals.
Tell me about your past as a musician! Sara, you know that you had music lessons in elementary school. Interview with Shereign).It is also known that Saku has also attended music, band and theater classes in school (interview with Stereo Terror). How about the rest of you, did you have a classical education?
Lasse: 12 years of classical piano and music theory studies (as a hobby). Also I went to an upper secondary school (with Johannes btw) on a line that emphasised music studies.
What else do you do besides your music? Do you have other projects at the start?
Lasse: I work full-time in IT support. There’s so many ideas for other projects but unfortunately there’s way too little time for those while keeping a day job and one band in which I’m heavily involved in composing and taking care of technical side of things.
Sara: I am a vocal coach and own my own business. So music all the way! And some painting and other arts when I have the time.
Saku: Basically 90% of my work is something music related, but I’m a gamemaster at local escaperoom company. When I have free time you might find me doing buhurt, skydiving or maybe just having a good beer with friends.
Are you interested in other styles besides metal?
Lasse: Metal is such a broad term of so many different genres, so I would say I’m not into all sorts of metal. I have a classical background and also found metal in my teens, so before that I pretty much listened to (and was exposed to) all sorts of pop and oldies. I’m very much into prog and prog metal nowadays but pretty much listen to all the cool stuff that comes up.
Saku: I don’t think about genres at all. Good music is good music no matter what genre it is.
Sara: Listening to all kinds of music keeps you smart and evolving. I wouldn’t be a good musician if I didn’t listen to all kinds of music genres.
How often do you meet in your rehearsal studio?
Sara: Once a week or sometimes even more often.
You have already stated on social media that you are working on a new album. When do you expect to release your new album?
Saku: We honestly have no exact dates or times for this but most likely at some point in 2021
Who are your greatest idols and inspirations for FoD in music and which records have influenced you the most?
Lasse: For me it is the compilation of everything that I’ve listened and learned during my life. Obviously for me there’s a lot of things from Children of Bodom or Stam1na but also from some more proggy bands like Dream Theater. I think that there’s some subconscious things in the works especially when it comes to composing melodies that are somehow beautiful and melancholic. I think it has something to do with being finnish and all the traditional finnish music that is heavily influenced by slavic and european music, which brings both the melodic side and the melancholic side.
Saku: Same here. Really hard to pinpoint one or two things/persons. I just try to keep it pure, naked and honest and express it out into the music
Each of you has a different face painting, how did you come up with your different face paintings?
Lasse: Trial and error and weird ideas from different people. We also tend to change the paint for every album (or sometimes every year), so for some of the paints there was some underlying idea that we all designed the paints for. However there really isn’t too many rules so everyone does what feels good for them.
Saku: I just watch my face in the mirror and see shapes and things. Brush does the rest.
After 10 years on stage together, Vesa (drummer) left the band in April. What was your reaction when Vesa told you this?
Sara: This decision was made in mutual consensus, so there was no reaction there. It was a thing that had been hanging in the air for quite some time. When the lockdown with corona started in Finland we had time to sit down and talk it through. So this decision was made because it was good for Vesa and for Fear of Domination.
Now Miikki has the position of the main drummer. How is it for you Miikki to take over this part?
Miikki: For me it’s a huge honor. And if I can say (of course I can because purkki kärpänen) it has been easy for me since I know all the songs and have been filling Vesa many times before in the past years. I think that the rest of the band think the same way.
Miikki, you have had problems with your wrist for a long time. At the beginning of the year you had an operation. Can you play the way you did before now?
Sara: Miikki has recovered surprisingly well from his hand operation. He has said that there aren’t any pains or achings anymore. I could say that due to this operation Miikki’s technique in playing the drums has gotten even better! His spirit is so high!
Many of you will surely have hobbies besides music. What are your hobbies?
Saku: Buhurt and skydiving
Sara: Arts, painting, sports and tending my avocado trees.
Some of you have tattoos too. Tell me what meaning do the individual tattoos have for you?
Saku: All of them are just pictures reminding me of different times and things in my life.
Sara: During these ten years when I have had my tattoos I have changed as a person so much so the reasons have changed too. My first tattoo was a seahorse because I loved the sea. My latest addition next to that seahorse was a nautilus. Between those two tattoos I have had 5 tattoos honoring the sacred geometry of nature and the human body.
Saku, this year you had a new stage outfit made by Forthefly Costums for your FoD and TK shows. But this is not the first time that Forthefly Costums have made you a stage outfit. How did you come across them and where do you get the inspiration for your outfit from?
Saku: I knew Keith and Emmi and have been checking out how their business had evolved. When I got rid of my old vest, Keith contacted me and told me he wanted to do a new one for me. We discussed some details but basically the whole artistic and visual side is made by him.

Sara: During these corona times, keep on listening to music and when it’s possible go to the gigs. Support your favorite bands and prevent them to not call it quits once and for all! So sharing their music, liking and commenting on their social media posts and listening to their music doesn’t cost a dime but helps a great deal!
