Mono (Japan)

Nein.

„Nowhere, now here“ ist etwas härter, als eure vorherigen Alben.

Mono (Japan)

MONO was founded in the year 2000 and since then they have delighted numerous fans around the world with their amazing Post-Rock. With their Music they create a feeling that will remain unforgettable.

Taka, you learned the guitar, inspired by your big brother who also played the guitar. Would you have learned another instrument if he hadn’t played the guitar?

I can’t imagine anything other than guitars. If I didn’t discover guitars, I can’t imagine how my life would have turned out to be. Guitars became the gateway to music and music is my life’s everything.

You are playing on classics/classical instruments of guitar-history, can you tell us a little more about the instruments? What exactly is it, where did you get it from?

I’m using Fender’s Jazzmaster 1966 model. The sound is very organic, and it can cover all the wide range from delicate deep clean sounds to the loud wall of sounds like My Bloody Valentine.

I purchased this 25 years ago at a vintage guitar shop called Hyper Guitars in Tokyo.

For your first gig in New York, you had to sell some of your equipment. Were these things just as unique?

That’s a great memory. Yoda and I sold some pedals and guitars we weren’t using to cover travel expenses required to go to New York. Back then, in 2000, we definitely wanted to play in New York and we vaguely thought that would open the way for our future.

Have you ever thought of buying them back because they were part of Monos history?

No. Simply because we don’t quite remember what we sold anymore and we already purchased what we needed later on.

The story of Mono started without a manager, without fame, without english language. Did you ever think you would be so famous?

From the bottom of our hearts, we believed our dream will, in certainty, come true. Although, we’re still in the middle of that dream journey. We’re truly thankful to all our fans and partners around the world who have been supporting us.

Which stage was furthest from home that you have played on so far?

I think they’d be Brazil, Argentina and Chile from one of our South American tours. I remember it took us 24 hours to travel.

Which show was the furthest from your home? How was it to play there and having fans so far away?

The feeling is incredible because we don’t have vocals nor do we play easy-to-digest pop music. I’m truly happy that we’re able to connect and share something important with people, with the music we believe in like this.

How did you feel this far away from home?

Whenever I embark on a journey, I try not to think about anything but the everyday shows, because that’s what we’ve always prioritised and wanted to do ever since we formed the band. Although, of course, we do miss our family and friends.

„Nowhere, now here“ is a bit harder / heavier than your albums before. What has led to this change of your music style?

Right before we made this album, we had various troubles and from that exhaustion, we were in a state of potentially disbanding the band. But I believed the only way forward was to write songs and get out of this darkness, so I just wrote and wrote, based on all my feelings.

In the end, I wrote a story about regenerating from the pitch-black darkness where we felt nothing was anywhere – „Nowhere“, and the feeling of through dawn, we want to welcome a new chapter right here – „Now, Here“.

Dahm, you are an integral part of Mono for almost three years now. How did you feel at the moment Mono accepted you as a new member?

MONO/Dahm: I felt very excited, honoured and very lucky.

As a fan in front of the stage, had you already played on stage with the Band in your mind?

We have an ideal figure we envision, like how we’d like to see bands, but when we’re playing, we immerse ourselves in music so we can’t think about anything else.

Will the song „Breath“ be the only Song with vocals in the history of Mono? Or could there be more of them at some point in the future?

With „Breathe“, there was something we really wanted to convey in words. In recent years, we really got exhausted to the point of suffocation due to the various troublesome business matters and their egos, far from anything creative. From such a point where we could not move, we wanted to express our determination that, „we’re going to cut the past and move towards the new surface“, with a song and lyrics.

At this moment, whether writing another song with vocals or lyrics is completely undecided.

With your music you express feelings that you feel in the process of song writing. Are there moments on stage sometimes when you can’t play the song exactly in the way you wrote it because you don’t feel the same way as when creating the song?

There are certain times things don’t go as you planned, because it will depend on that day’s mood and condition as well. But the core feelings of what we want to express per song do not change, and even if something happens, we discuss as a band face-to-face and correct the trajectory.

Taka, you already met one of our Team-Members during an Interview in Munich in 2016. We’d like to ask you the question, that touched you the most back there in 2016: How do you feel when you look into the audience and everyone has their eyes closed to feel your music?

Oh! It’s so great to hear from you again, and thank you so much for the interview! We, ourselves, are most influenced, affirmed and saved by music so we’re truly happy that we can share the same feelings with all our listeners.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer our questions. All the best for you!
