Ihr habt seit diesem Jahr mit Paolo Marchesich einen neuen Drummer. Stellt ihn unseren Lesern doch einmal vor, und erzählt, wie es zu dem Wechsel kam!
Danke, dass ihr mich hier berücksichtigt! Es ist traurig, dass es mit Manu Lotter nicht geklappt hat. Leider ist das passiert und ich habe mich schließlich entschieden, einen italienischen Schlagzeuger aus unserer Heimatstadt zu nehmen.
Paolo war einer der wenigen besten Kandidaten, bereits vor einigen Jahren in die Band aufgenommen zu werden, aber es ist nie zu spät. Er ist ein Killer-Schlagzeuger und eine sehr nette Person.
Ihr arbeitet gerade am Nachfolger von „The Eighth Mountain“. Wie kommt ihr damit voran, und gibt es bereits einen Veröffentlichungstermin?
Im Moment arbeite ich an den letzten Orchesterarrangements. Dieses Jahr wurde alles aufgenommen, wir haben uns wirklich die Zeit genommen, die wir gebraucht haben, um für jedes Bandmitglied und jeden Teilnehmer das Beste herauszuholen. Sebastian „Seeb“ Levermann wird es sehr bald mixen. Es wird 2021 veröffentlicht, das ist alles, was ich jetzt sagen kann.
Die Screams und Growls eures Sängers Giacomo Voli auf „Tales of a Hero‘s Fate“ und der Neuaufnahme von „When Demons Awake“ klangen fantastisch. Wird es davon auf dem neuen Album mehr zu hören geben?
Vielen Dank! Diese Screams und Growls sind Teile des Klangs, also gibt es ein paar davon in einigen Teilen. Es hängt immer davon ab, was zum Lied passt.
Auf eurer gerade unterbrochenen Tour habt ihr das 20-jährige Jubiläum eures Albums „Dawn of Victory“ gefeiert, und das mit einer kompletten Aufführung des aktuellen Albums „The Eighth Mountain“ kombiniert. Wie kamt ihr auf diese tolle Idee?
Wir wollten über die übliche Auswahl an Songs, die wir sonst aussuchen, hinausgehen. Wir wollten das neue Album der Welt präsentieren und unseren Fans die Möglichkeit geben, es live in seiner Gesamtheit zu erleben. Die Kombination mit mehr als der Hälfte von Dawn Of Victory war gewaltig. Ich bin sehr froh, dass wir es gemacht haben, weil die Fans es wirklich zu schätzen wussten.
Werdet ihr so etwas auch 2022 mit „Power of the Dragonflame“ machen? Das wäre eine tolle Gelegenheit, mal den 19-Minuten-Longtrack „Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness“ in voller Länge aufzuführen!
Das wäre eine epische Idee! Ich bin sicher, auch das werden wir feiern.
Eure Version der Band existiert seit 2011, als Luca Turilli und Patrice Guers die Band verließen. Habt ihr noch Kontakt zu euren Ex-Mitgliedern, und verfolgt ihr deren weitere Projekte?
Bitte erlaubt mir, eure Aussage zu korrigieren. Mitte 2011 beschlossen Luca Turilli und ich, musikalisch getrennte Wege zu gehen. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt haben wir seit Anfang der 90er Jahre zusammengearbeitet. Vielleicht versteht ihr die Situation, ha ha! Nachdem die Saga beendet war, hatten wir das Gefühl, dass es der richtige Moment war, uns zu trennen und etwas Neues für uns beide zu beginnen.
Ich persönlich brauchte brandneue Gesichter bei RHAPSODY OF FIRE und ich hatte das Glück, mich wieder mit meinem langjährigen Freund Roby De Micheli in Verbindung setzen zu können, einem großartigen Gitarristen und einer fantastischen Person, mit der ich arbeiten konnte. Mit der tatsächlichen Besetzung bin ich wirklich glücklich und fühle mich jeden Tag meines Lebens gesegnet. Ich kann allen in der Band nicht genug danken, Giacomo, Alessandro, Paolo, unserer großartigen Crew, unserer Merchandiserin Francesca, unserer Touragentur Nine Lives Entertainment, unserer Agentin und Tourmanagerin Chiara Pellegrini und allen um mich herum, die mir auf dieser fantastischen Reise helfen.
Ich habe keinen Kontakt zu Ex-Mitgliedern. Eigentlich habe ich meine Kontakte sehr eingeschränkt, da meine Arbeit viel Zeit erfordert und es meine Priorität ist, fokussiert zu bleiben.
War es nach dem Split schwer, an eure vorherigen Erfolge anzuknüpfen, oder sind die meisten Fans euch treu geblieben?
Ich bin mir sicher, dass viele Fans unglücklich über die Trennung waren, und es ist normal, dass einige verschiedenen Bands und Richtungen folgen würden. Das ist eine Tatsache. Natürlich ist es nach einer Trennung nicht so einfach, neu anzufangen, aber gleichzeitig gibt es viel Aufregendes und viel Begeisterung für das, was als nächstes kommt und für die neuen musikalischen Abenteuer.
Es ist auch so, dass die Fans und die Zuhörer sehr klug sind und genau wissen, was sie wollen und welche Musik sie hören möchten. Mein Job und meine Mission ist es, Musik zu schaffen, die ich liebe und mit der ich mich identifizieren kann. Ich arbeite immer mit purer Freude in meinem Herzen und Aufregung in meinen Adern und hoffe, dass diese Musik jemanden da draußen erreicht und sein Herz berührt. Ich glaube, dass Fans Musik erkennen können, die mit Aufrichtigkeit und Ehrlichkeit geschaffen wurde. Ich glaube, dass Fans leicht falschen Metal von echtem Metal unterscheiden können. Wir danken allen, die RHAPSODY OF FIRE treu geblieben sind!
Ihr habt für eure Alben schon mehrfach mit Orchestern zusammengearbeitet. Wie fühlt es sich an, wenn ein echtes Orchester die eigene Musik spielt?
Es fühlt sich fantastisch an! Es gibt nichts, was diese Emotion übertrifft. Echte Instrumente sind sehr wichtig für mich und die Musik von RHAPSODY OF FIRE. Neben einem Orchester möchte ich auch einzelne Musiker in die Produktion einbeziehen, da ich glaube, dass sie etwas bewirken können, und ich freue mich, sie zu unterstützen. Sie verdienen es.
Habt ihr Lieblingsalben in eurer Diskographie?
Ich habe die starke Tendenz, jedes Album und jeden Song unserer Diskographie zu schätzen, aber ich bevorzuge eher die neuesten Produktionen, da ich mich persönlich tiefer mit ihnen identifizieren kann.
Welche Bands beeinflussen euch am meisten?
Viele, und es geht natürlich nicht nur um die Musik. Ich habe schon in jungen Jahren angefangen, Musik zu hören, den Rock der 70er, den Metal der 80er und 90er und so weiter und nicht nur Rock und Metal. Ich mag gute Musik und gute Lieder, so einfach ist es. Ich liebe Filme und Filmmusik. In Bezug auf Bands, als ich jung war, war ich von allen Bands ganz besonders von Crimson Glory begeistert, aber die Liste könnte mit R.J. DIO, Malmsteen, Europe, Helloween, Blind Guardian, Ozzy, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Van Halen und vielen anderen weitergehen. Ich war hungrig nach Musik, wollte unbedingt neue Bands entdecken und kaufte einfach viele Alben und ging zu Konzerten.

Hello and first of all: Thank you for the possibility of this Interview.
Since this year you got a new drummer, Paolo Marchesich. Please introduce him to our readers and tell us, how the change came about.
Thank you for having me here! It is sad that with Manu Lotter things did not worked out, unfortunately this happened so I finally decided to get an Italian drummer from our home town.
Paolo was one of the few best candidates to enter in the band already a few years back, but it’s never too late. He is a killer drummer and a very sweet person.
You are currently working on the successor of “The Eighth Mountain“. How is the progress with this and is there already a release date?
Right now I am working on the final orchestral arrangements. Everything was recorded this year, we really took the time we needed to obtain the best for each band members and participants. Sebastian “Seeb” Levermann will mix it very soon. It will be released in 2021, that’s all I can say right now.
The screams and growls of your singer Giacomo Voli on „Tales of a Hero‘s Fate“ and the re-recording of “When Demons Awake“ sound fantastic. Will there be more of them on the new album?
Thank you! Those screams and growls are parts of the sound, so yes, there are a few interventions like that in a few parts. It always depends on what the song needs.
On your recently interrupted tour you celebrated the 20th anniversary of your album “Dawn of Victory“ and combined that with a full performance of the current album “The Eighth Mountain“. How did you come up with this great idea?
There is simply much more than the old catalogue of songs to choose from. We wanted to present the new album to the world and give the chance to our fans to experience it live in it’s entirety. Combining it with more than half Dawn Of Victory was huge. I am very glad we made it because the fans really appreciated it
Are you going to do something like that with “Power of the Dragonflame“ in 2022 too? That would be a great opportunity to perform the 19-minute long track “Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness“ in full!
That would be surely an epic idea! I am sure we will celebrate it as well.
Your version of the band exists since Luca Turilli and Patrice Guers left the band. Do you still have contact with your ex-members and do you stay updated with their new projects?
Please, allow me to correct your statement. In mid-2011 Luca Turilli and myself decided to follow separate musical paths. Until that moment we worked together since the very beginning of the 90’s.. so you may understand the distress, ha ha! After the saga was concluded we felt it was the right moment to part ways and start something new for the both of us.
I personally needed brand new faces in RHAPSODY OF FIRE and I was blessed enough to reconnect with my longtime friend Roby De Micheli, a great guitarist and a fantastic person to work with. With the actual line-up I am truly happy and feel blessed every day of my life. I can’t thank enough everybody in the band, Giacomo, Alessandro, Paolo, our amazing crew, our merchandiser Francesca, our touring agency Nine Lives Entertainment, our agent and tour manager Chiara Pellegrini and everybody around me helping me in this fantastic journey.
I do not have any contacts with ex-members. Actually I have limited my contacts a lot since my work demands a lot of time and to stay focus is my priority.
Was it difficult to build on your previous successes after the split or have most of the fans stayed loyal to you?
I am sure many fans were unhappy about the split, and that’s normal that some would follow different bands and directions. That’s a fact. So of course after a split it’s not so easy to re-start, but at the same time there is a lot of excitement and enthusiasm for what’s coming next and the new upcoming musical adventures.
It is also true that the fans and the listeners are very smart and they know exactly what they want and what music they want to hear. My job and my mission is to create music that I love and that I can relate with. I always work with pure joy in my heart and excitement in my veins, hoping this music will reach somebody out there and touch it’s heart. I believe that fans can recognize music that is created with sincerity and honesty. I believe that fans can easily discern false metal from true metal. We thank everyone that remained loyal to RHAPSODY OF FIRE!
You have already worked with real orchestras several times for your albums. How does it feel to hear, when a full orchestra plays your music?
It feels fantastic! There is nothing that top that emotion. Real instruments are very important for me and the music of RHAPSODY OF FIRE. Beside having an orchestra I also like to involve single players to join the production since I believe they can make a difference and I feel happy to support them. They deserve it.
Do you have favorite albums in your discography?
I have the strong tendency to appreciate every album and song of our discography but I tend to prefer the latest productions since I can personally relate to them more profoundly.
Which bands influence you the most?
Many, and it is not only about the music of course. I started listening to music in early age, from the rock of the 70’s, the metal of the 80’s and 90’s and so on, and not only rock and metal. I like good music and good songs, very simple. I adore movies and film music. In term of bands, when young I was absolutely taken by Crimson Glory above all bands, but the list could go on with R.J. DIO, Malmsteen, Europe, Helloween, Blind Guardian, Ozzy, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Van Halen and so many many more. I was hungry for music, eager to discover new bands and I would just buy lots of albums and go to concerts.
