Hello and welcome to Metal Affair!

First of all thank you to taking the time to answer the questions!

How are you?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: I’m quite good, thank you for asking.

This year you are celebrating your 10th anniversary of the band, you recorded your live album in your hometown. How was it for you to record the album at 3 sold out shows?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: It was really fun. We didn’t really change anything from a regular show, we really wanted to make an album that was really live so we just did a live show the way we love it. So my experience was basically what I’ve done countless times before and absolutely love, I just strapped on my guitar, went on stage and had shitloads of fun with my friends.

Next year you’re going on tour with Finntroll in spring. How excited are you to go on tour with the Finns?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: Very excited. One of the most fun I have in life is when I’m travelling with friends, playing my music and Finntrolls are really good friends. So it’s going to be fantastic.

What are your plans for the future with Skalmöld?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: We don’t really have a solid plan except for this tour. We are still enjoying some time off and when that’s over we’ll sit down and see what we want to do.

Do you have favorite festivals or locations where you always want to perform? Are there special memories regarding to festivals or locations you want to share with us?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: There are many places we love visiting, France and Poland for example but in those 10 years I’ve never been to a place I didn’t like to visit. When it comes to festivals I really like Summer Breeze and last year we played Heavy Montréal and that was really lovely.

Are there any bands you say: „wow, we would like to go on Tour with them?“ Which band are this?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: Sure. I would love to tour with bands like Rotting Christ and Kvelertak, Black Dahlia Murder and also Primus and Bad Religion. And of course Iron Maiden.

Before you start working on a new album, where do you get your inspiration from and who of you has the first idea?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: My brother Snæbjörn gets an idea, sometimes fully developed and sometimes a rough one. When the idea is fully polished we start working on the music, usually the song titles are ready before we start making the songs and sometimes we take a song a certain way because of where we are in the concept. And then we just mix all of our ideas into songs. The Snæbjörn writes the lyrics, that happens last.

Metal Affair: Who are your idols in the music world who have personally inspired you?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: Personally I have a hard time idolising anyone, whenever someone says “this individual is better then someone else” my thought goes straight to “meh, there’s piss inside everyone”. But I tend to really love the music someone makes. Bad Religion had a huge impact on me, especially when it comes to the use of melody and vocals. Punk and punk rock is really my go to music, Bad Religion, No means no, Dead Kennedys and Rancid have had a big influence.

Metal Affair: What music do you listen to besides metal?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: All sorts. Punk, indie, pop, folk and post for example.

Are there any other projects you are working on besides Skalmöld? Which projects are this?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: Sure. Me and my brother we have two bands going on, Ljótu hálfvitarnir is a folk pop drinking band with 9 people. Innvortis is a punk rock band. Then I have another punk band called Morðingjarnir. Then I write a lot of children music for my theater group called Leikhópurinn Lotta. And also I record and produce 6 podcasts each week.

Did you already deal with music in your childhood?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: Yes. Can’t remember a time where I wasn’t playing or making music.

In addition to your music, you certainly have hobbies that you can pursue in your spare time. Tell us!

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: I love playing computer games. They’ve been a huge part of my life and there’s nothing that compares to a really really good game. Also making theater and recording and making podcasts, I listen to a ridiculous amount of podcasts.

Thank you very much! That’s it for our questions. Is there anything you want to share with our readers?

SKÁLMÖLD/Baldur: Stay safe, be nice to each other and we’ll see you somewhere on the other side of the plague!
