Wenn man in der Metalszene nach Grave Digger fragt, wird beinahe jeder die großen Hits der Band mitsingen können. Bei dieser breiten Bekanntheit ist es natürlich sehr schade, dass die Band nie den wirklich großen Erfolg hatte. Dennoch kann die Band auch nach über 40 Jahren sicher sein, dass sie bei einer ausgedehnten Deutschlandtour immer noch überall die Clubs mit begeisterten Fans füllen kann. An diesem Freitagabend machten sie in der Backstage Halle in München Station.
Celler Stone
Ebenfalls mit dabei waren die griechischen Rocker von Celler Stone. Vor bereits recht voller Halle legte die Band mit „Lights Out“ los. Etwas überraschend war der Stil, denn der Heavy Rock passte eigentlich gar nicht zu den anderen beiden Bands. Doch das störte heute niemanden.
Der Sound war perfekt, lediglich das Keyboard ging etwas unter. Egal ob langsamer Stampfer („Wash My Sins Away“) oder schnelles, wie „One Fine Day“, hier kam jeder auf seine Kosten. Das tolle Black Sabbath-Cover „Mob Rules“ wurde auch kräftig von den Fans mitgesungen. Mit „Borrowed Time“, das durch tolle Melodien und einem eingängigen Refrain punkten konnte, ging die Show dann auch schon zu Ende.
Mystic Prophecy
Als zweite Band waren Mystic Prophecy am Start. Die Power Metaller aus Bad Grönenbach sind schon lange ein Garant für tolle, energiereiche Shows. Der erste Song „Metal Divison“ konnte die hohen Erwartungen gleich voll erfüllen. Die Band hatte auch einige eigene Fans mitgebracht, was man besonders bei Mitsingsongs wie „Killhammer“ deutlich merkte.
Mystic Prophecy hatten ein ausgeglichenes Programm aus alten („Savage Souls“) und neuen Songs („Hail to the King“) vorbereitet. Live waren es aber besonders die neueren Stücke, wie das sehr harte „War Panzer“, die beim Publikum besonders gut ankamen. Wie schon Cellar Stone, hatten auch Mystic Prophecy ein Cover im Programm, nämlich „Shadow on the Wall“ von Mike Oldfield. Obwohl es gut gespielt war, wollte es doch nicht so recht in das Set passen. Denn mit Power Metal-Krachern wie „Eye to Eye“ konnte es nicht ganz ankommen.
Mit „Metal Brigade“ wurde dann leider auch schon der letzte Song angekündigt. Wer sich jetzt fragte, ob Mystic Prophecy die Bühne ohne ihren bekanntesten Song verlassen würden, konnte diese Frage schnell mit Nein beantworten. Denn als Zugabe gab es natürlich noch „Ravenlord“ zu hören. Ein toller Auftritt.
Grave Digger
Doch trotzdem war heute die Mehrheit der Anwesenden nur wegen einer Band gekommen, nämlich Grave Digger. Und nun machte sich schnell große Vorfreude breit. Zum Intro „The Siege of Akkon“ betrat das Bandmaskottchen, der Reaper, die Bühne, dicht gefolgt von der Band, die mit „Lawbreaker“ in Bestform loslegte.
Weiter ging es mit dem einzigen Song des neuten Albens des gesamten Abends, dem großartigen „Hell Is My Purgatory“. Spätestens zu Hits wie „Ballad of a Hangman“, das die gesamte Halle begeistert mitsang, war die Stimmung am Kochen. Zu „Dia De Los Muertos“ kehrte der Reaper zurück, diesmal jedoch mexikanisch verkleidet. Sehr atmosphärisch!
Doch nun war es an der Zeit für ein paar Überaschungen. Frontmann Chris Boltendahl kündigte ein paar Songs an, die schon länger nicht gespielt wurden. Genau solche Experimente, wie das epische „Circle of Witches“ wollten die Fans schon lange mal hören. Genauso großartig funktionierte das düstere „The House“, das von Chris mit seinem charakteristischen Akzent, der inzwischen auch (im positiven Sinne) nicht mehr wegzudenken ist, mit „Se Haus“ angekündigt wurde.
Aber nun ging es wieder mit Hits weiter. Und die haben Grave Digger ja mehr als genug. Wer bei „The Dark of the Sun“ den Refrain nicht begeistert mitschmetterte, und zum von Gitarrist Axel Ritt fantastisch gespielten Gitarrenriff nicht durchgehend headbangte, der war wohl heute Abend falsch. Genauso toll ging es mit „Highland Farewell“ weiter. Nur „Wedding Day“ wollte wie schon öfter nicht so recht zünden.
Das war aber längst vergessen, als die Band zu ihren zwei bekanntesten Stücken ansetzte. Zuerst bretterte das pfeilschnelle „Excalibur“ aus den Boxen, bevor Axel Ritt zum charakteristischen Clean-Intro des Übersongs „Rebellion (The Clans Are Marching“) ansetzte. Chris Boltendahl dirigierte die Menge, die komplett alleine den Refrain anstimmte. Jedes Mal wieder Gänsehaut pur. In der Mitte des Songs trat auch nochmal der Reaper auf die Bühne, wie immer mit Dudelsack in der Hand. Dieser Song funktioniert live so gut, dass man ihm am liebsten dreimal hintereinander hören würde.
Doch alles geht einmal zu Ende, und so verließen Grave Digger im Anschluss die Bühne. Doch natürlich war klar, dass es das noch nicht gewesen sein sollte. Ziemlich schnell wurde eine Akustikgitarre auf der Bühne platziert. Weiter ging es dann mit der tollen Halbballade „Yesterday“. Nach „Healed By Metal“ folgte dann der wirklich letzte Song „Heavy Metal Breakdown“, der nochmal richtig abgefeiert wurde.
Natürlich zog die Band ihr übliches Spiel durch, und verließ nach dem ausgedehnten Power-Schluss die Bühne, nur um kurz darauf wieder zurückzukehren, und den letzten Refrain ein weiteres Mal zu spielen. Nun war es aber wirklich vorbei, und die Band verabschiedete sich von den Fans.
Grave Digger brauchen einfach keine großen Hallen. Diese Band gehört in die Clubs, denn so eine grandiose, energiereiche Show funktioniert hier einfach am besten. In dieser Form dürfen Grave Digger gerne jederzeit wiederkommen!

If you ask about Grave Digger in the metal scene, almost everyone will be able to sing along with the band’s big hits. With this broad awareness, it is of course a great pity that the band never had the really big success. Nevertheless, even after more than 40 years, the band can be sure that they can still fill the clubs with enthusiastic fans everywhere during an extensive tour of Germany. On this Friday evening they made a stop at the Backstage Halle in Munich.
Celler Stone
Also on stage were the Greek rockers from Celler Stone. In front of an already quite full hall the band started with „Lights Out“. A little bit surprising was the style, because the heavy rock didn’t really fit to the other two bands. But that didn’t bother anyone today.
The sound was perfect, only the keyboard went down a bit. No matter if it was a slow stomper („Wash My Sins Away“) or a fast one like „One Fine Day“, everybody got his money’s worth. The great Black Sabbath cover „Mob Rules“ was also sung along by the fans. With „Borrowed Time“, which scored with great melodies and a catchy chorus, the show came to an end.
Mystic Prophecy
The second band to start was Mystic Prophecy. The power metallers from Bad Grönenbach have long been a guarantee for great, high-energy shows. The first song „Metal Divison“ could fulfill the high expectations right away. The band had also brought some of their own fans, which was especially noticeable during sing-along songs like „Killhammer“.
Mystic Prophecy had prepared a balanced program of old („Savage Souls“) and new songs („Hail to the King“). Live, however, it was especially the newer songs, like the very hard „War Panzer“, that were particularly well received by the audience. Like Cellar Stone, Mystic Prophecy also had a cover in their program, namely „Shadow on the Wall“ by Mike Oldfield. Although it was played well, it didn’t really fit into the set. Because with power metal bangers like „Eye to Eye“ it couldn’t quite get there.
With „Metal Brigade“ the last song was unfortunately announced. Who now wondered if Mystic Prophecy would leave the stage without their most famous song, could quickly answer this question with no. Because as encore there was of course „Ravenlord“ to hear. A great performance.
Grave Digger
But still, the majority of the people present today had come only because of one band, namely Grave Digger. And now great anticipation spread quickly. To the intro „The Siege of Akkon“ the band mascot, the Reaper, entered the stage, closely followed by the band, which started with „Lawbreaker“ in top form.
The band continued with the only song of the new album of the whole evening, the greatgreat „Hell Is My Purgatory“. At the latest with hits like „Ballad of a Hangman“, which the whole hall sang along enthusiastically, the atmosphere was boiling. For „Dia De Los Muertos“ the Reaper returned, but this time dressed up as a Mexican. Very atmospheric!
But now it was time for some surprises. Frontman Chris Boltendahl announced a few songs that hadn’t been played for a while. Exactly such experiments, like the epic „Circle of Witches“ the fans wanted to hear for a long time. Just as great worked the gloomy „The House“, which was announced by Chris with his characteristic accent, which in the meantime can’t be imagined without (in a positive sense) „Se Haus“.
But now it went on again with hits. And Grave Digger have more than enough of those. Whoever didn’t enthusiastically sing along to the chorus of „The Dark of the Sun“ and headbang to the guitar riff played fantastically by guitarist Axel Ritt, was probably wrong this evening. It went on just as great with „Highland Farewell“. Only „Wedding Day“ didn’t really work out, as it often does.
But that was long forgotten when the band started to play their two most famous songs. First of all, the arrow-quick „Excalibur“ came crashing out of the speakers, before Axel Ritt started the characteristic clean intro of the over-song „Rebellion (The Clans Are Marching“). Chris Boltendahl conducted the crowd, who sang the chorus completely alone. Pure goosebumps every time. In the middle of the song the Reaper entered the stage again, as always with bagpipes in hand. This song works so well live that you would love to hear it three times in a row.
But everything comes to an end once and so Grave Digger left the stage afterwards. But of course it was clear that this should not be it yet. Quite quickly an acoustic guitar was placed on stage. The show continued with the great half ballad „Yesterday“. After „Healed By Metal“ the really last song „Heavy Metal Breakdown“ followed, which was really celebrated again.
Of course, the band pulled their usual spiel, and left the stage after the extended power closing, only to return shortly after, and play the last chorus one more time. But now it was really over, and the band said goodbye to the fans.
Grave Digger simply don’t need big halls. This band belongs in the clubs, because such a grandiose, high-energy show simply works best here. In this form Grave Digger are welcome to come back anytime!
