Euer Bandname stammt von einem Song von Entombed. Habt ihr die Band schon einmal getroffen, oder mit ihnen zusammen gespielt?
Leider hat sich die Möglichkeit einer gemeinsamen Show bis dato nicht ergeben! Ich habe mich bei einer der letzten Stuttgart Shows von ENTOMBED A.D. eine Weile mit Sänger L.G. Petrov unterhalten und Ihm auch ein REVEL IN FLESH Shirt geschenkt. An dieser Stelle schicken wir beste Genesungswünsche nach Stockholm, denn wie bekannt ist muss sich der Fronter gerade einer Chemo – Therapie unterziehen! Wir drücken die Daumen! Außer Frage steht, dass ENTOMBED ein ganz großer Einfluss sind auch wenn sich unser Klangbild über die Jahre hinweg zu etwas Eigenständigem entwickelt hat.
Auf jedem eurer Alben befindet sich auch ein Coversong. Habt ihr schon mal darüber nachgedacht, genau dieses Lied zu covern?
Das Original auf „Left Hand Path“ ist dermaßen ein Signature in Sachen Sound und Umsetzung, so dass ich der Meinung bin, dass man diesen Song nicht besser hinbekommen bzw. auch nicht mehr Eigenleben einhauchen kann. Wir haben auf unserem aktuellen Album „The hour of the aveneger“ den Track „Rock Out“ von MOTÖRHEAD gecovert! Es steht außer Frage, dass man Lemmy zu huldigen hat, Ha! Ha!
Ihr tretet unter Pseudonymen auf, bei denen ihr eure echten Namen so abgeändert habt, dass sie schwedisch klingen. Ein Tribut an den schwedischen Death Metal?
Ja, wir haben dies auf dem ersten Album in einer „Bierlaune“ heraus angefangen und fortan jedes Bandmitglied „schwedifiziert“ – ist ein Tribut, welcher jedoch auch mit Humor zu nehmen ist!
Die großartigen Cover-Artworks von allen euren Alben stammen durchweg von Juanjo Castellano. Wie seid ihr auf diesen fantastischen Künstler gestoßen?
Ich wurde aufgrund der Artworks für SATHANAS, BLASPHERIAN und VOMITORY auf Juanjo Castellano aufmerksam. Seit 2011 arbeiten wir als feste Partner zusammen. Alle unsere Alben Cover stammen aus seiner „Feder“ – er hat die visuelle Seite von REVEL IN FLESH unheimlich geprägt! Für uns ist hierbei eine Konstante auch sehr wichtig! Wir waren 2011 eine der ersten deutschen Bands, welche mit Ihm gearbeitet hat! Mittlerweile hat er viele deutsche Kunden und generell eine große Nachfrage nach seinen Artworks.
Ihr veröffentlicht auch regelmäßig Split-Singles mit anderen Bands, die aus den verschiedensten Ländern (z.B. Mexiko, Island, USA) auf der ganzen Welt stammen. Wie organisiert ihr so etwas?
Mir ist eine Verbundenheit mit der Underground Szene sehr wichtig und diese Split 7″Eps sind für Sammler der absolute Knaller! Viele 7″Eps entstanden aus eigenem Antrieb indem wir uns mit den jeweiligen Bands zusammengeschlossen und final ein Label für den Release gesucht haben.. Das Ging bisher immer ganz gut und mit wachsendem Status der Band ist es auch immer einfach eine Heimat für den Release zu finden. Die meisten 7″Eps sind mehr oder weniger ausverkauft. Alle unserer „Vinyl Only“ Tracks sind auch auf der Compilation „Relics of the Deathkult“ (WAR ANTHEM Rec. / JOE BLACK Rec.) Zu finden.
Was waren die Highlights eurer bisherigen Karriere?
Der Release des fünften Albums „The hour of the avenger“ über WAR ANTHEM Records im Dezember 2019. Die Pressestimmen und das Feedback auf das Album hat unsere Erwartungen regelrecht gesprengt. Es war ein Album, welches zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort war. Die Release Show war irre und mit dem Album im Rücken hatten wir ein tolles Back Up, viele gute Bookings und einen wirklichen Plan für den Schritt nach vorne…leider kam im März 2020 die Covid 19 Krise, welche regelrecht den Stecker gezogen hat!
Gab es auch nicht so schöne Momente?
Das Jahr 2020 ist ein noch immer anhaltender „Downer“ und die aktuelle Lage ist so undurchsichtig, dass jede Planung schwebend unwirksam ist! Ohne Live Shows verpufft das beste Album!
Habt ihr Lieblingsalben in eurer Diskographie?
In Verbindung mit unserem neuen Drummer ist „The hour of the avenger“ das Album, welches mit unserer Rezeptur bisher am besten gelungen ist! Es wirkt in sich stimmiger, eigenständiger und führt den Kelch weiter! Als DEATH METAL Purist ist jedoch das dritte Album „Death Kult Legions“ wohl die Vollbedienung; Lyrics / Settings etc. auf diesem Album sind eine absolute Huldigung des Genres zelebriert von Fans für Fans!
Welche Bands haben euch im Laufe eurer Karriere beeinflusst?
DISMEMBER, EDGE OF SANITY, ENTOMBED, AUTOPSY, GOREFEST, DEATH, BOLT THROWER, MASTER, GRAVE, AT THE GATES, BENEDICTION….ebenso viel klassicher Metal / Hardrock. Unser Style ist generell sehr im europäischen (Death) Metal verankert, für den technischen Ami Kram haben wir wohl zu wenig Nerv, Ha!
Auf eurer Facebook-Seite habt ihr angedeutet, dass ihr an einem neuen Album arbeitet. Gibt es dazu bereits etwas neues?
Wir haben im Oktober 2 neue Tracks final aufgenommen. Einer hiervon wird 2021 auf einer Split 7″EP mit einer holländischen Band erscheinen. Aktuell ist ein neues Full Length Album noch in weiter Ferne – aber es kocht und brodelt!

Your band name is taken from a song by Entombed. Have you ever met the band or played with them?
Unfortunately, the possibility of a joint show has not yet come to light! At one of the last Stuttgart shows of ENTOMBED A.D. I talked a while with singer L.G. Petrov and also gave him a REVEL IN FLESH shirt. At this point we send best wishes to Stockholm, because, as is well known, the front man is currently undergoing chemotherapy! We keep our fingers crossed! There is no question that ENTOMBED are a very big influence, even if our sound has developed into something independent over the years.
There is also a cover song on each of your albums. Have you ever thought about covering this exact song?
The original on „Left Hand Path“ is so much a signature in terms of sound and implementation that I am of the opinion that this song cannot be made better or breathed more life of its own. We covered the track „Rock Out“ by MOTÖRHEAD on our current album „The hour of the avenger“! There’s no question that Lemmy has to be worshiped, ha! Ha!
You perform under pseudonyms where you’ve changed your real names so that they sound Swedish. A tribute to Swedish Death Metal?
Yes, we started this on the first album in a „beer mood“ and henceforth „Swedishized“ every member of the band – it’s a tribute, which has to be taken with humor!
The great cover artworks of all of your albums come from Juanjo Castellano. How did you come across this fantastic artist?
I became aware of Juanjo Castellano because of the artworks for SATHANAS, BLASPHERIAN and VOMITORY. We have been working together as permanent partners since 2011. All of our album covers come from his „pen“ – he has really shaped the visual side of REVEL IN FLESH! A constant is also very important for us! In 2011 we were one of the first German bands to work with him! In the meantime he has many German customers and generally a great demand for his artworks.
You also regularly release split singles with other bands from all over the world (e.g. Mexico, Iceland, USA). How do you organize something like that?
A connection with the underground scene is very important to me and these split 7 „eps are an absolute blast for collectors! Many 7″ eps were created on our own initiative by joining forces with the respective bands and finally looking for a label for the release. So far, things have always gone very well and as the status of the band grows, it’s always easy to find a home for the release. Most of the 7“ eps are more or less sold out. All of our „Vinyl Only“ tracks can also be found on the compilation „Relics of the Deathkult“(WAR ANTHEM Rec. / JOE BLACK Rec.).
What have been the highlights of your career so far?
The release of the fifth album „The hour of the avenger“ via WAR ANTHEM Records in December 2019. The press reviews and the feedback on the album literally exceeded our expectations. It was an album that was in the right place at the right time. The release show was crazy and with the album behind us we had a great back-up, lots of good bookings and a real plan for the step forward … unfortunately the Covid 19 crisis came in March 2020, which literally pulled the plug!
Were there not so nice moments, too?

The best album fizzles out without live shows!
Do you have favorite albums in your discography?
In connection with our new drummer, „The hour of the avenger“ is the album that has worked best with our recipe so far! It is more coherent, independent in itself and passes on the chalice! As a DEATH METAL purist, however, the third album „Death Kult Legions“ is probably full service; Lyrics / settings etc. on this album are an absolute homage to the genre celebrated by fans for fans!
Which bands have influenced you throughout your career?
DISMEMBER, EDGE OF SANITY, ENTOMBED, AUTOPSY, GOREFEST, DEATH, BOLT THROWER, MASTER, GRAVE, AT THE GATES, BENEDICTION …. just as much classic metal / hard rock. Our style is generally very much anchored in European (Death) Metal, we probably don’t have enough nerve for the technical American stuff, Ha!
On your Facebook page you indicated that you were working on a new album. Is there anything new about that?
We finalized 2 new tracks in October. One of them will be released on a Split 7″ EP with a Dutch band in 2021. Currently a new full length album is still a long way off – but it’s boiling and bubbling!
