Manch einer fragt sich jetzt vielleicht: Metal Affair bei Bonnie Tyler? Passt das überhaupt? Diese Frage kann man ganz klar mit „Ja!“ beantworten.
Auch wenn Bonnie Tyler manchmal eher im Popbereich unterwegs ist, singt sie auch sehr gerne und vor allem auch gut Rocksongs. Und ihre legendäre raue Stimme hat bestimmt auch die ein oder andere Metalband beeinflusst. Und als sie nun auf ihrer Tour zum 40-jährigen Jubiläum ihres Hits „Total Eclipse of the Heart“ in den Circus Krone nach München kam, war für uns klar: Wir müssen dabei sein.
More Than Words
Mit dabei war auch die Band “More Than Words”. Dabei handelte es sich um eine Band der Schlagersängerin Stefanie Hertel, ihrem Mann Lanny Lannert und ihrer Tochter Johanna Mross. Doch zum Glück hatte die Musik des Trios mit Schlager überhaupt nichts zu tun, denn es handelte sich um Country Rock.
Mit dem fröhlichen Stück „Smile“ starteten sie in ihr Set. Dabei stach sofort der außergewöhnlich gute dreistimmige Gesang der Band hervor. Die Stimmen der drei harmonierten perfekt miteinander. Das zeigte sich auch besonders beim tollen ABBA-Cover „Mamma Mia“.
Weiter ging es mit dem Titeltrack des aktuellen, zweiten Albums „Today“. Wenig später wurde es emotional. Denn bei „Something Like Dad“ ging es um die besondere Beziehung zwischen Lenny und seiner Stieftochter. Dabei betonten sie immer wieder, dass es für sie keine Rolle spielt, dass sie nicht blutsverwandt sind.
Kurz vor Schluss spielten “More Than Words” dann noch ein Medley aus großen Hits der Musikgeschichte. Besonders der Anfang, bei dem sie das Intro von „Bohemian Rhapsody“ sangen, war fantastisch. Aber auch die weiteren Songs (u.a. „Country Roads“, „Dancing Queen“) funktionierten in der Country Rock-Version hervorragend.
Als allerletztes gab es dann noch einen letzten eigenen Song („Home“) zu hören. Dieser tolle Auftritt zeigte mal wieder, dass hinter dem in der Metalszene so unbeliebten Schlager oft wirklich gute Musiker stecken, denen man unbedingt eine Chance geben sollte, wenn sie sich mal an anderen Genres versuchen.
Bonnie Tyler
Doch mal ehrlich: natürlich waren die meisten Zuschauer nur für eine Person hier: Bonnie Tyler. Und nach kurzer Umbaupause ging es auch schon los.
Mit dem rockigen „Flat on the Floor“ betraten Bonnie und ihre Band unter großem Jubel die Bühne. Die Stimmung und der Sound waren perfekt. Anschließend begrüßte sie die begeisterten Fans, bevor sie den nächsten Song „Have You Ever Seen the Rain“ (Creedence Clearwater Revival) ankündigte.
Der dritte Song war dann das tolle Kiss-Cover „Hide Your Heart“. Interessant war gleich, dass die ersten drei Songs (wie auch viele andere in der Setlist) keine eigenen, sondern Cover-Songs waren. Das erklärte sich aber dadurch, dass Bonnie Tyler mit vielen dieser Künstler befreundet ist, oder zumindest schon mit ihnen zusammen gearbeitet hatte.
Nach diesen drei sehr rockigen Covern war es aber an der Zeit für den ersten ruhigen, eigenen Song. „Lost in France“ erfüllte diese Rolle sehr gut, handelte es sich doch um ihren ersten großen Hit.
Zwischen den Songs unterhielt Bonnie die Fans mit spannenden und auch oft lustigen Anekdoten aus ihrer langen Karriere. Ab diesem Punkt war fast jeder gespielte Song ein Hit.
Der erste echte Höhepunkt war „It‘s a Heartache“, bei dem das Publikum begeistert mitsang, und bereits nach kurzer Zeit hielt es niemanden mehr auf den Stühlen. Sehr stark!
Ein bisschen Werbung für ihre Autobiografie (die sie eigentlich nie schreiben wollte) durfte natürlich auch nicht fehlen. Vor allem, weil sie den Titel eines von ihr gecoverten Bryan Adams-Songs trug. Und eben dieser, „Straight to the Heart“, folgte direkt danach.
Als Nächstes folgte der absolute Höhepunkt der Show, nämlich der Titeltrack der Tour „Total Eclipse of the Heart“. Auch wenn Bonnie stimmlich nicht mehr ganz ihre besten Zeiten erreichen konnte, lieferte sie dennoch eine fantastische Gesangsleistung ab. Das Publikum sang natürlich weiterhin fleißig mit.
Den nächsten Song „The Best“ widmete sie Tina Turner, die den Song kurz nach Bonnie Tyler gecovert hatte und ihn zu einem Welthit machte. Die Stimmung war weiterhin grandios.
Doch völlig überraschend verließen Bonnie und die Band danach bereits die Bühne. Sollte es das nach nicht ganz einer Stunde schon gewesen sein? Natürlich nicht, denn die Zugaberufe der Fans wurden nach kurzer Zeit erhört und es gab das schnelle „Faster Than The Speed of Night“ zu hören. Dieser Song hätte eigentlich bereits früher gespielt werden sollen, doch Bonnie hatte ihn einfach vergessen, wie sie lachend erzählte.
Ihr Mann Robert Sullivan, den sie auf die Bühne holte, um sich bei ihm zu bedanken, hatte sie in der kurzen Pause darauf aufmerksam gemacht. Bei einem Großteil der Crew, sowie dem Tourmanager, und ihrer Band, bedankte sie sich ebenfalls namentlich.
Doch natürlich wollten die Fans noch mehr hören. Und so spielte sie noch das Janis Joplin-Cover „Turtle Blues“. Hier lieferte Bonnie Tyler noch einmal eine beeindruckende Gesangsleistung ab, die beste des Abends. Doch auch die Instrumentalisten durften hier noch einmal glänzen, denn es gab ein tolles Keyboard- und Gitarrensolo zu hören.
Aber jeder Fan wusste, dass ein ganz großer Hit noch nicht gespielt wurde, der auf keinen Fall fehlen durfte. Und wie erwartet bildete „Holding Out For a Hero“ den perfekten Schlusspunkt. Die Fans sangen jedes Wort mit und die Band genoss noch einmal jede Sekunde. Die Musik steigerte sich immer weiter bis zum grandiosen Höhepunkt, bei dem der Schlagzeuger sogar durchgehend Double Bass spielte. Das freut uns als Metaller natürlich ganz besonders.
Uns so ging ein fantastischer Abend zu Ende. Nur die kurze Spielzeit von nur etwa 75 Minuten war etwas schade. Doch daran wird sich kaum jemand gestört haben.

Some of you might be wondering: Metal Affair with Bonnie Tyler? Does that fit at all? This question can clearly be answered with „Yes!
Even if Bonnie Tyler is sometimes rather in the pop area on the way, she also sings very gladly and above all also well rock songs. And her legendary rough voice has certainly influenced one or the other metal band. And when she came to the Circus Krone in Munich on her tour for the 40th anniversary of her hit „Total Eclipse of the Heart“, it was clear to us: We had to be there.
More Than Words
The band „More Than Words“ was also there. This was a band of the pop singer Stefanie Hertel, her husband Lanny Lannert and their daughter Johanna Mross. But fortunately the music of the trio had nothing to do with Schlager at all, because it was country rock.
They started their set with the cheerful piece „Smile“. The band’s exceptionally good three-part singing immediately stood out. The voices of the three harmonized perfectly with each other. This was especially evident in the great ABBA cover „Mamma Mia“.
The show continued with the title track of the current, second album „Today“. A little later it became emotional. Because „Something Like Dad“ was about the special relationship between Lenny and his stepdaughter. They emphasized again and again that it doesn’t matter to them that they are not related by blood.
Shortly before the end, „More Than Words“ then played a medley of great hits from music history. Especially the beginning, where they sang the intro of „Bohemian Rhapsody“, was fantastic. But also the other songs (among others „Country Roads“, „Dancing Queen“) worked great in the country rock version.
The very last song to be heard was one of their own („Home“). This great performance showed once again that behind the in the metal scene so unpopular Schlager are often really good musicians, who should definitely be given a chance, if they try other genres.

But let’s face it: of course, most of the audience was here for one person only: Bonnie Tyler. And after a short break, the show started.
With the rocking „Flat on the Floor“ Bonnie and her band entered the stage under big cheers. The mood and the sound were perfect. She then greeted the enthusiastic fans before announcing the next song „Have You Ever Seen the Rain“ (Creedence Clearwater Revival).
The third song was then the great Kiss cover „Hide Your Heart“. It was interesting right away that the first three songs (as well as many others in the setlist) were not their own, but cover songs. But this was explained by the fact that Bonnie Tyler is friends with many of these artists, or at least had already worked with them.
After these three very rocking covers, however, it was time for the first quiet, original song. „Lost in France“ fulfilled this role very well, since it was her first big hit.
Between the songs Bonnie entertained the fans with exciting and also often funny anecdotes from her long career. From this point on, almost every song played was a hit.
The first real highlight was „It’s a Heartache“, where the audience sang along enthusiastically, and already after a short time it didn’t keep anyone on the chairs anymore. Very strong!
Of course, a bit of publicity for her autobiography (which she never actually wanted to write) was not to be missed. Especially because it was titled after a Bryan Adams song she covered. And just this one, „Straight to the Heart“, followed directly after.
Next came the absolute highlight of the show, which was the title track of the tour, „Total Eclipse of the Heart.“ Even though Bonnie couldn’t quite reach her best times vocally, she still delivered a fantastic vocal performance. Of course, the audience continued to sing along diligently.
She dedicated the next song „The Best“ to Tina Turner, who had covered the song shortly after Bonnie Tyler and made it a world hit. The mood continued to be terrific.
But completely surprisingly Bonnie and the band already left the stage afterwards. Should that have been it after not quite an hour? Of course not, because the fans‘ calls for the bandwagon were heard after a short time and the fast „Faster Than The Speed of Night“ could be heard. This song should have been played earlier, but Bonnie had simply forgotten it, as she laughingly told.
Her husband Robert Sullivan, whom she brought on stage to thank, had brought it to her attention during the short intermission. To a large part of the crew, as well as the tour manager, and her band, she also thanked by name.
But of course the fans wanted to hear more. And so she played the Janis Joplin cover „Turtle Blues“. Here Bonnie Tyler once again delivered an impressive vocal performance, the best of the evening. But also the instrumentalists were allowed to shine here once again, because there was a great keyboard and guitar solo to hear.
But every fan knew that a very big hit had not been played yet, which could not be missing in any case. And as expected, „Holding Out For a Hero“ was the perfect ending. The fans sang along with every word and the band once again enjoyed every second. The music went on and on until the grandiose climax, where the drummer even played double bass throughout. Of course, as metalheads, we are especially happy about that.
And so a fantastic evening came to an end. Only the short playing time of only about 75 minutes was a bit of a pity. But hardly anyone will have been bothered by that.
