Mitä kuuluu?
(How are you?)
Kiitos oikein hyvää, kevättä rinnassa! Olemme todella innoissamme uudesta levystä ja kihisemme ilosta päästä esittämään uutta materiaalia!
(All good thank you, spring vibes in the air. We’re excited about the new album and can’t wait to perform new songs.) -Joonas
Tell us a little bit about Rain Diary: how it starts at the beginning with the band in Tampere at 2007 till now? (For all Reader who didn´t know you.)
I’m actually truly amazed that’s it’s almost 20 years of Rain Diary… Jeez! The band ”roots” were actually laid already in 1998 when me and Teemu started to play together. In 2007 we met our previous singer Tommi and shortly after Tytti whom all shared same passion to dark and melancholic music with a good twist of electronics. There’s been line-up changes but I could say that this ”dark & melancholic” ethos is the common factor to all band members and guides our doings. I would say that the biggest change is naturally our ”new” singer Joonas whom joined our band four years ago. It took a some learning to great one cohesive unit so that’s the reason our third album took a lot longer than expected. -Joni
Before you start working on a new album, where do you get your inspiration from and who of you has the first idea?
Sadness and joy, longing for a touch and then having it, to be lost and to be found.. Life in general. I’d say that lyrics are my personal therapy, little poems and parables from a diary. The initial kick for the song can be a word, memory or a line. It can also just be nice chord shapes or hint of an melody.. We always work the songs together so once in a while one could find it hard to tell wether initial demo is even the same song as the final ”product”. -Joni
On Spotify we can listen 2 new singles of your upcoming album right now. Do you plan something for your fans at the relase day (27.03.2026)?
We’re actually having record release gig at Bar Loose on that day. Let’s see if we could come up with some special.. We have a support Rain Diary – Pages Between in Facebook where we organize special things. -Joonas
The album „Black Weddings“ includes a song called „Berlin“. Does this song have a special meaning for you?
We simply adore Berlin! Also, our previous singer Tommi used to live in Berlin when this song was made and some of the emotions were transferred to the song. Berlin works as a metaphor for a perfect place we run to hide our sorrows and fears. -Joni
Right after the album release you start with your little tour. Where you will be play in Finland and on which dates?
Only three shows are booked so far so in Helsinki Bar Loose 27.3., Nirvana (Turku) 28.3. and hometown spectacle 4.4. in Maanalainen. -Joonas
Last year you had supported Florian Grey at a few shows of his tour. How was it and do you wanna do it again?
It was the absolute bestness and we truly truly wish that we could perform another time with Florian. We’ve known him over 10 years and this was actually 2nd time we toured in Germany with him. -Joonas
How often do you meet in your rehearsal studio?
Roughly once in a month as whole group but me and Joni work with the new songs weekly basis. Of course, when there are gigs coming like now, we rehearsal at least every second week long long days. -Joonas
Who are your idols in the music world who have personally inspired you?
I’d say that Depeche Mode, The Cure, Placebo and IAMX are the biggest influences but also Anathema and Riverside have played a huge role specially in the early part of our path. -Joni
What music do you listen to besides rock/metal?
Pretty much everything as Tytti loves industrial, me & Teemu are also into electro & crossover hiphop stuff, Lauri digs everything from indie into the deepest end of doom and Joonas has huge favorites like Oasis, Bruce Springsteen and Nick Cave (whom I adore naturally too). -Joni
You certainly have other projects at the start besides RD. Which would they be?
I sing a garage rock band called Fuzzkills, Tytti plays in a modern American band called SaintPolis and Lauri has at least Nollasopimus (punk) and then some serious doom/death metal thing going on. -Joonas
Did you already deal with music in your childhood?
Yep, it’s always been important part to us all to identify ourselves. Let’s put it this way: The music cannot describe us and we echo the music we’ve been trough. -Joni
In addition to your music, you certainly have hobbies that you can pursue in your free time. Tell us!
Heh, all I can say is that Joni is the oldest – and probably the best – +40y basketball player I know! -Joonas
Kiitos paljon!
(Thank you very much!)
That’s all for my questions. Is there anything you want to share with our readers?
The world we live in is such a mess now so let’s try to stick together with fellow ”gothlins” and look everybody else’s backs or otherwise all the love will fade away… Pitäkää siis huolta rakkaistanne ja tulkaa halaamaan seuraavan kerran nähdään! xxx
